8 November 2017 in the State Kremlin Palace hosted a festive concert dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”
About six thousand people came to congratulate “MEPhI” – graduates, current employees, teachers, post-graduate students and university students. Among the guests are representatives of the Administration of the President of the Russian Federation, the Government of the Russian Federation, the State Duma of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Education and Science, the State Atomic Energy Corporation “Rosatom”, the industrial partners of the university, the Russian Academy of Sciences, and many veterans of the nuclear industry.
General director Alexander Ageev took part in the solemn event.
An unique photo exhibition, organized in the foyer of the Kremlin Palace, gave the guests the opportunity to recall memorable episodes from the life of the university. On black-and-white and color photographs, before this carefully stored in the cathedral and personal archives, reflects a large and very difficult history of the university. But most importantly – in the photos there are people, who created the nuclear university, who studied there and multiplied the achievements of “MEPhI” with their achievements.
On this day, from the stage, the most kind wishes and congratulations were addressed to “MEPhI”.
A congratulatory address from Russian President Vladimir Putin was read by the Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Olga Golodets.
“Since the first days of the foundation, the university has become a center for the development of advanced scientific and technical thought, training highly qualified specialists for strategically important sectors of the domestic economy, including the nuclear industry. Within its walls, serious research activities were carried out, bold and innovative solutions were developed and introduced into practice” – the President said.
“Today, like all the past decades, “MEPhI” is famous for its strong traditions, competent teachers, gifted and enthusiastic students. And therefore his diploma is a testament to deep, thorough knowledge, a reliable voucher. I am convinced that the university will continue to confidently keep the bar of one of the leaders of higher profile education not only in our country, but also abroad, to help talented, purposeful youth find their vocation”
– Vladimir Putin expressed confidence.
With the 75-year anniversary of “MEPhI” congratulated the General director of the State corporation “Rosatom” Alexei Likhachev.
He highlighted the symbolism that the date of the “MEPhI” creation coincided with one of the most significant dates of the Great Patriotic War – the encirclement and defeat of the Paulus army at Stalingrad, an operation called “Uranus”. Subsequently, the graduates of the university, using the radioactivity of uranium, began to forge the nuclear shield of our country.
According to Alexey Likhachev words, the core university of the nuclear industry of he National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI” today uses high standards of education at all levels, which allows young people to be not only well-trained specialists, but also ensures the continuity of generations in the nuclear industry enterprises.
“Every year, no less than a third of “MEPhI” graduates and its affiliates come to work for us and for nuclear specialties. This figure reaches 80 percent” – said Alexei Likhachev and recalled that many graduates of the university traditionally occupied and now occupy leading positions in the industry, and three people – Lev Ryabev, Victor Mikhailov and Alexander Rumyantsev in different years led the industry.
“Among those who today are the pride of the nuclear industry are many graduates of the university. I am sure that this good tradition will continue, and new graduates will continue to occupy leading positions in Rosatom. After all, over the next seven to eight years, we plan to hire at least six thousand people in Rosatom. We are waiting for you, dear students, colleagues. Rosatom and “MEPhI” – a single team!” – said Alexei Likhachev.
Special words were addressed to the veterans of “MEPhI” who dedicated their lives to the development of the country’s scientific potential, the development of the nuclear industry, and the strengthening of its defense capability. These are people who brought up a galaxy of outstanding scientists, a generation of highly qualified specialists, in the reliable hands of which today is the present and the future of Russia.

The history of “MEPhI” began 75 years ago during the war, on November 23, 1942, when the USSR Council of People’s Commissars signed the decree on the formation of the Moscow Institute of Ammunition, known since 1945 as the Moscow Institute of Mechanics. The name Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPhI) was received in 1953. And in 2008 “MEPhI” became one of the first two national research universities and was renamed the National Research Nuclear University “MEPhI”.
